| Dr. Takanishi is the Hawaii State Chair of the Commission on Cancer. The CoC Mission Statement reads as follows "The Commission on Cancer (CoC) is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care." Three state chairs were honored for their outstanding performance in 2005 and 2006 during the recent CoC meetings. Nominees were required to meet approved criteria and were selected based on data provided through the State Chair Activity Reports and collected by CoC staff over the last calendar year. Danny M. Takanishi, Jr., MD, FACS, Hawaii State Chair: for Support and Initiation of CoC Activities at the State and Regional Level Dr. Takanishi attended three CoC surveys across the state of Hawaii in 2005 providing assistance and support to the programs and CLPs (cancer liaison physicians) when needed. He hosts an annual CLP meeting cosponsored and attended by the ACS, assists in recruitment of new CoC programs in Hawaii, and encourages his CLPs to release Level II data. He also served on the program planning committee and as a moderator for the CoC's 2006 conference on quality cancer care. |

Danny Takanishi Jr., Chair of Surgery and Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program at the University of Hawai'i John A. Burns School of Medicine, has been voted Chair-elect of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Transitional Year Residency Review Committee. His three-year term begins in July 2009. Dr. Takanishi is the Surgery representative on this multidisciplinary Committee.
The ACGME is a nonprofit consortium that evaluates and accredits residency training programs in the United States. It includes representatives from the American Medical Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, American Hospital Association, American Board of Medical Specialties, and the Council of Medical Specialty Socities. A resident-in-training must complete postgraduate medical education training in an ACGME-accredited program, in order to qualify to take their medical specialty training-specific, national Board examinations.
Dr. Takanishi, also Associate Professor of Surgery, will concurrently serve as a voting member of the Council of Review Committee Chairs. This Council is responsible for maintaining and initiating revisions to the ACGME Common Program Requirements and also serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of Directors of the ACGME.
